Translation is a much-needed service in nearly all fields of life. The translation services sector has shown a steady growth in the past decade, providing employment for thousands of people. Currently, English-Turkish translation services constitute the majority of the translation market. In fact, an upward trend is expected not only in the sector itself -particularly due to the increasing international demand for online interpreting and regular updates for web content- but also in the demand for well-equipped translators/interpreters who could act as cultural experts facilitating communication between English and Turkish.
Doğuş University English Translation and Interpreting Program has been designed in conformity with the National Qualifications Framework for Higher Education in Turkey qualifications and National Occupational Standards for Translator/Interpreter (Level 6). The four-year curriculum builds upon the knowledge and experience gained through translator education offered in Turkey since the 1980s.
The aim of our program is to train translators/interpreters who will not only use their working languages at the highest level and develop an understanding of current theoretical approaches, techniques and practices in the field of translation, but also have practical experience in translating oral and written texts, having acquired specialized knowledge and terminology in various fields (e.g. law, political science, economics and international trade).
Our curriculum offers language skills development courses (e.g. Turkish for Translators, Oral Communication Skills, Written Communication Skills) intended to improve those bilingual competences required by prospective communication experts. As for professional courses, they have been designed in order to strike a balance between theory and practice. While theoretical courses (e.g. Translation-oriented Text Analysis, Theoretical Approaches to Translation, Current Topics in Translation) provide an extensive view of the field, practical courses in the interpreting and translation modules (e.g. Community Interpreting, Consecutive Interpreting, Technical Translation, Translating Texts on Law) offer diversified practical experience. One distinctive feature of our program is that our students are offered the opportunity to take second foreign language electives for 8 semesters so that they can become proficient in a foreign language other than English.
Graduates of translation and interpreting departments are employed at various institutions such as publishing companies, translation offices, ministries, universities, banks, law firms as well as other public and private institutions involved in sectors such as tourism, international trade and media. There are also self-employed graduates who have established their own private translation offices as well as those who pursue career opportunities in the new media and digital gaming industries as copy writers and content editors.
